How Cute Is This?

My youngest, we'll call him "Deuce", brought home a little typed note for me the other day. It was from his friend's mother, and it said they wanted to set up a playdate so the boys could spend the night at each other's houses. This is the first time I've gotten one of these, he's 6. My 11 year old doesn't really like to leave the family, so he's never asked to go spend the night at a friend's house. He does have friends at school, and seems fine with leaving them at school.

Deuce is more outgoing, he's gonna be my social butterfly (should I say butterfly when he's a boy? maybe social hedgehog...yeah, that's more manly) so I called the kid's parents today, and the dad was really excited, said their kid has been wanting to have Deuce over for a long time.

Now I'm all stressed. Feeling the pressure of needing a nice house, car, etc. I know it's stupid and superficial, and if they don't like it, well, they can fuck off, right? But I don't want my kids to be shunned because (gasp!) we live in a plex. I'm all for not caring what people think of me, but when it comes to the kids I worry.

Don't get me wrong, I don't live in squalor by any means, it's just that we moved into this plex 4 years ago, and the rent is right, so it's hard to fathom moving and paying a couple hundred more per month, when really this is fine for us, a little small with the kids getting bigger and such, but it works. It's older, but so what? I have a sweet car, (when it gets fixed) but sadly I think that we are going to have to meet them before that happens. In the bird-shit speckled 79 Volvo. Agh! I put way too much stock in what people think of me.

The dad said he's retiring after 21 years in the marines, (impressive) and starting work at Lowe's in January. Makes me think they might not be high and mighty? I hope not. Maybe we'll have some new friends out of the deal, who knows? The just moved here from Jamaica (he was stationed there for 2 years) I'm sure they have some fascinating stories to tell.

I'm crossing my fingers that they'll let their kid come to our house, I'm nervous about Deuce spending the night elsewhere, he's my baby, and he's only spent the night at MY friend's kid's houses...

Who gives a rat's ass where and what you live in? If you don't have a meth lab, I'm thinking you're living large! You're a good mom and Jim is a good dad. Hands down.
